The History of Venusian Gardens

A prominent example of local architecture, VG occupies an historic building constructed originally as a church during the civil war in 1852. The building was built as a shared effort by two individual denominations whose own churches had been destroyed by fire, one white and one of free men of color.

Sometime in the early 1900’s the building ceased functioning as a church and moved on to be used in various businesses including a speakeasy, gambling den, coffin manufacturing and home restoration supply source. It was purchased by the artist in 2001 when it was converted to a sculpture studio and gallery.
